PINK magazine / audience

The target audience of PINK magazine is young, impressional teenagers - mainly female. The reason for the publication existing is to challenge what is already on the market and educate young people on issues that are important and relevant in their life. Content includes information about the LQBTQ+ society and an article on self care. Having a publication readily available that discusses these topics will help normalise specific issues for readers and reassure them.

The magazine also features more light-hearted content such as fashion articles and music reviews that are relevant to the audience. This means we must design the magazine with these aspects in mind and ensure that the tone of voice is relevant to all of the content.

Identifying the audience early on allows me and Lo to create a brand and identity for PINK that is suitable and relevant to readers.

EOYS / concept

To begin the process of creating a concept, we first started to brainstorm names. We wanted something that would show off the college and our work, rather than concentrating on leaving the university.

Names Brainstorm
After some discussion, we decided that Lo and Behold (derived from Look and See) was the name we liked the best. It conveys a sense of greatness and that everyone should look at what we've created.

Once we had the name, we started to think about what stylistic treatment would work best. Lo has a very contemporary style and we wanted to work that into our branding somehow, yet still conveying grandeur. My main thought for the identity was a spotlight beaming down in the background of the poster. This shows a focus on our work and puts Leeds College of Art centre stage.

pear / print supplier

Finding a print supplier that falls in my budget of £65 for two copies of a magazine was quite tough. I searched online for perfect bound books and the majority of printers were way over my budget. I contacted a few companies for quotes and they were almost always over £100:

I found a company called digital printing that provided lots of different services for extremely reasonable prices and various options for perfect bound printing.

For two versions of the same magazine the price totals £31. For this price the quality may not be the best but with the given timescale and budget this was the best option:

confectionary packaging / target audience

The design is not particularly limited by the target audience. The audience is anyone who eats sweets already, ranging from young children to adults as old as 60-70. The product essentially needs to appeal to as many people as possible. A brand that also has this ethos is Haribo. Their tagline is "kids and grown-ups love it so, the happy world of Haribo", meaning everyone can enjoy their sweets no matter what their age.

The product should have universal appeal, and to strengthen this the brand will only produce confectionary that is vegan. This will not be a huge part of the design or branding itself, but will sit quietly with the ingredients to ensure buyers that anyone can purchase and eat this product. The product will also match competitors prices on the standard sweets shelf to ensure as many people as possible can purchase the product.

the internet's love of dogs / project plan

After gathering substantial research and content from various social media accounts, it seemed the best way to display the information was in the form of an encyclopaedia. This allows for all of the information to be displayed in alphabetical order so users can access what they need easily. It's also a physical resolution which can be used as a coffee table book or talking point. Other ways of displaying the information could be in posters, a website or animation, but they are each limiting in different ways. A poster or poster series doesn't have enough room to display all of the information and won't grab the attention of the viewer for long enough for them to read everything. A website could have potential, but can be easily forgotten and doesn't have much purpose other than discussing dog memes, which other platforms already do successfully. An animation could also be successful but there is no platform for it to be seen.

I began to compile a list in alphabetical order of the types of dogs, memes and social media pages that will be included within the encyclopaedia:

lights / shoot 3

After some feedback on the images Robert took in Sheffield (shoot 1) and direction from me at the fair (shoot 2) he went back to Sheffield to take some more images in new locations with improved knowledge of what was needed by the brief.

pear / printing considerations

As Pear is a magazine it should be printed professionally. Previously, Pear was printed using the university facilities and staple bound. This method was certainly cheaper but it lost the professional effect.

Pear would be best suited to a perfect bound style with quite a thin (120gsm) stock that is suitable for children to draw on. Perfect binding allows the magazine to lay flat and removes potentially dangerous staples.

The cover should be slightly thicker as this will keep the magazine together and look professional when the magazine is bound. A glossy cover would suit the design but a satin cover may be more suitable for the audience as it should be able to withstand dirt and fingerprints.

The budget for printing is around £50 as £45 was spent on the plushies.

lights / shoot 2

For this shoot me and Robert went to the fair in Leeds to take advantage of the bright lights. Although it was raining slightly we managed to get some good photos for the brief, and as I was there to direct him I felt the images came well suited to the project.
